The Humanity in Automation

Written by Maggie Pagratis

The president's eyes shone during the interview; a definite turn of events from one of Canada's fastest growing companies: Scanpak. The meeting, expected to be highly technical, turned personal and real and the message that resonated was president's humanity and his concern for growth, creativity and his fellow human being. When asked what it was that the president of Scanpak wished for the future, Valerio Lanzieri says that he wishes to give...to contribute not only to the world of innovative electronics and engineering, but to humanity on the whole. “I'd like to contribute more to society more for what I've received,” he says. “I've received what I had to receive, and I'd like to give it back...It feels good.”

RFID

Founded in 1995 by Lanzieri, Scanpak is a well established company with locations in Montreal and Toronto, specializing in the (AIDC) Dynamic Automatic Information and Data Collection with three main divisions: RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Devices), Bar code Division and Software Division.

The company offers innovative, advanced bar coding products and services, and secure host access as well as application integration solutions. It has had an excellent track record in bar coding, which initially generated 95 % of its revenues. Two years ago, the company invested in the design and production of the cutting edge Radio Frequency Identification tracking devices for which Scanpak won the Accolades Award in 2006.

ALLIANCES

Scanpak has extensive alliances with leaders in wireless networks, radio frequency identification (RFID) systems, RF applications, bar codes and labeling Its continued success is realized through a business model that exploits their core competencies while also partnering with other companies to provide all the necessary components of a complete solution.

AIR CANADA ADVENTURE

Recently Scanpak took RFID to a new level by creating the 'chip' and 'reader' to be placed on all Air Canada trolleys. “We were the first ones, and we still are the first ones. It's very niche market. The RFID has to be adapted to the application. You can't just pick up this tag and this reader and say, 'Okay, this will do for you...' We created the technology for the airline industry, so we had to follow strict guidelines as far as not interfering with all the other systems on board. You've got to watch out so you don't interfere with the navigational system. It was very challenging--to say the least...” It is often the human intervention factor which slows down the process of inventory. It increases the likelihood of error, resulting in profit loss. The RFID completely eliminates this possibility, enabling inventory-taking without third party intervention.

SOLUTIONS

Scanpak has organized Dynamic Automated Information and Data Collection Systems ( AIDC) solutions by industry. This new approach, they hope, makes for easier comprehension and usage within the marketplace. Security, support, reliability, increased automation and accuracy of data are their priorities. Since its founding, Scanpak has striven to deliver an excellent product to the marketplace.

Lanzieri's hope is that the customer will come to experience Scanpak's commitment first hand.. He believes that at Scanpak, with the continued support of satisfied customers and partners, they will continue to create and deliver quality solutions. To achieve this objective, all members of the Scanpak team are dedicated to meeting each company's needs with enthusiasm, creativity and, above all, quality. At Scanpak, says Mr. Lanzieri, they constantly challenge themselves to develop new strategies along with innovative products and services that can help their clients and partners improve performance and increase profitability.

Passions

Lanzieri passionately quotes Henry Ford's statement both on the company's website and on a plaque found at the entrance of their headquarters in Montreal: “Coming together is just a beginning; staying together is progress; working together is success.” It is clear he is proud that his company, partners and clients have not only stayed together but also thrived together. When asked what the best advice he has received and given is, he says, “Go for your dream. Never give up....you'll get there...if you set yourself with little goals to get to the big goal, you'll make it. ”

GIVING BACK

Lanzieri's interest lies clearly on further developing RFID which he believes will soon replace all bar coding and be the norm of the way all companies manage inventory. But Lanzieri's actions are now directed not only at electronics and mechanics. His fervor has taken an additional direction. After having received and been so fortunate, he is now preoccupied with giving back to those less fortunate in society. He currently volunteers at the West Island Community Center and plans on continuing to give back to the world which has “given him so much.” He intends on making that aspect of his life evolve as he is making the use of RFID evolve to worldwide use.
